Schiff Receives Top Ratings From Two Civil Rights Groups

NAACP AND LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE ON CIVIL RIGHTS GIVE SCHIFF VOTING RECORD ‘A’ RATING

WASHINGTON, DC (January 29, 2004) - Due to his voting record in the first session of the 108th Congress, Rep. Adam Schiff received a grade of "A" from two civil rights groups, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights (LCCR).

"I am proud to receive ‘A’ grades from both the NAACP and the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights," Rep. Schiff said today. "Working for civil and human rights is paramount to my legislative agenda and I am honored to be recognized by two such important civil rights organizations."

Since 1914, the NAACP has issued grade ratings for congressional members on key civil rights votes. The NAACP Legislative Report Card issued Schiff an ‘A’ rating for his votes on such issues as extending unemployment insurance, granting funds for international AIDS relief, extending the child tax credit, expanding head start, overhauling the Medicare system and eliminating discrimination in public schools.

The LCCR, the nation’s oldest civil and human rights coalition, awarded Rep. Schiff a 100% rating for his voting record on civil rights and liberties, workers’ rights, consumers’ rights and human rights. The votes examined by the LCCR cover a broad range of issues including criminal justice, K-12 education, job training and welfare reauthorization.

Rep. Schiff is the co-founder of the Democratic Study Group on National Security and a member of both the House Judiciary and International Relations Committees. He represents California’s 29th Congressional District, including the communities of Alhambra, Altadena, Burbank, East Pasadena, East San Gabriel, Glendale, Monterey Park, Pasadena, San Gabriel, South Pasadena and Temple City.
